Natalie Scriven, who helps to organise the competition for The Guardian, was travelling with me in India and her own blog about the trip is now going up on the competition site.
I am the shadowy figure referred to throughout only as "the finalist".
On The Silk Road is a record of my journey to India in September 2009 to write an article for The Guardian about traditional silk handloom weavers in Varanasi. Their livelihoods are being threatened by cheap imports, and their story is a familar tale of globalisation, with free markets ranged against protectionism, but also of the clash between tradition and modernity.
During my time in India I will be visiting the partner organisations of Find Your Feet, an NGO working to eradicate rural poverty, as well as meeting local journalists, politicians and the artisans who have found themselves faced with unprecedented social upheaval.
