On The Silk Road is a record of my journey to India in September 2009 to write an article for The Guardian about traditional silk handloom weavers in Varanasi. Their livelihoods are being threatened by cheap imports, and their story is a familar tale of globalisation, with free markets ranged against protectionism, but also of the clash between tradition and modernity.

My name is Kevin E.G. Perry and I have been shortlisted for The Guardian International Development Journalism Competition for an article I wrote on sanitation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

During my time in India I will be visiting the partner organisations of Find Your Feet, an NGO working to eradicate rural poverty, as well as meeting local journalists, politicians and the artisans who have found themselves faced with unprecedented social upheaval.
